Read the table downwards and you have the whole machine: something spins, something tells it to, something catches the grease, something carries the air outside, and on a downdraft something lifts the whole lot out of the counter. Each page below opens with the same four columns, so you can name the part before anybody quotes you for it.
Moving the air
- Hood Blower Motor The motor that turns the blower wheel — in the canopy, in the duct, or outside on a roof or a wall.
- Blower Run Capacitor A small cylinder wired beside the blower motor, there to get the wheel moving from standstill.
- Blower Wheel The rotating drum that does the actual work of pulling air off the cooktop.
- Internal Blower Assembly The whole motor-and-wheel package mounted inside the hood itself.
- In-Line Blower A blower mounted along the duct run rather than in the hood or outside the building.
- Remote Roof or Wall Blower The blower option that is mounted outside, at the far end of the duct.
Controls and power
- Hood Speed Control The bank of contacts behind the control strip that decides how much of the supply reaches the blower.
- Hood Control Board The circuit board that reads the buttons and passes power out to the blower and the lamps.
- Wall Control and Low-Voltage Wiring The switch sited away from the canopy, and the light cable carrying what it says back to the blower.
- Heat Safety Sensor The sensor reading the air through the canopy, which raises blower speed without being asked.
- Hood Lamps and Driver The lamps set into the underside of the canopy, their sockets, and the one supply feeding them all.
Catching grease
The duct run
- Duct Transition and First Elbow The adapter above the blower outlet and the bend that follows it, where lost pull usually starts.
- Backdraft Damper A flap that lets air out and will not let weather back in, set where the duct leaves the hood.
- Wall Cap and Roof Jack The termination fitting where the hood duct passes out through an outside wall or the roof deck.
- Make-Up Air Damper A powered damper in a separate supply duct, wired to open whenever the hood runs.
- Telescoping Chimney Cover The stainless sleeve covering the duct from the top of the canopy up to the ceiling.
